Arts Award at Skipton Town Hall
As an Arts Award Centre, Skipton Town Hall offers children and young people aged 5-25 the opportunity to gain recognised Arts Award qualifications awarded by Trinity College London, which help them to develop as artists and art leaders. Both Discover and Bronze levels are on offer. (Please see the Arts Award website for more details about different levels: Arts Award)
Broadwood School Arts Award Programmes
Since September 2024, students from Broadwood school have worked with us to gain 7 Discover awards on day trips to Craven Museum and 5 Bronze awards (a Level 1 qualification), through a full term of sessions both at school and at the museum. The school provides specialist teaching and support for children with social, emotional and mental health needs and the flexible approach of the Arts Award framework enabled the programmes to be effectively adapted to suit the students.
Arts Award Discover
For their Arts Award Discover, pitched at Key Stage 1 and 2, students completed a trail to spot art around the museum, learned about an artist whose work is displayed, took part in an art activity and shared what they had learned with their teachers and peers. The art activities were based on history topics each class was covering at school, with one group creating Victorian peg dolls and another making Roman-inspired clay pots. There was also lots of opportunity for dressing up and trying out the museum interactives and sensory bags!
Bronze Award
The Bronze Award programme, for Key Stage 3 and 4, was delivered in collaboration with the school’s art teacher, who worked with Education Officer Chloe to design a series of lessons and assess students’ portfolios along the way. To achieve their award, students had to take part in art activities, experience and review an arts event, research an artist and teach someone else an art skill, evaluating how it went. Chloe provided in-person support in several art lessons at Broadwood and hosted a visit to Skipton Town Hall, where students explored the museum and experienced behind-the-scenes activities with the curator and some museum artefacts. A real highlight of the programme for her was observing the students teach their art skills, supporting and encouraging younger peers to make their own coil pots from paper and foil.
Sam, art teacher at Broadwood School, said, “I would highly recommend Arts Award for pupils in a non-mainstream setting who benefit from a more flexible approach to learning. Working in collaboration with Skipton Town Hall meant that we didn’t need to worry about anything beyond supporting pupil progress and wellbeing, as Chloe took care of all the admin and made sure all the assessment criteria were met through the activities.”
