Workshop: Tom Faulkner - A Portrait of Stories
by Jayne Davies
Join us for a talk, discussion and creative workshop around the themes of photography, archives and truth.
The workshop looks at the photo archive of Tom Faulkner, a well-loved local photographer who documented the lives of ordinary people and special events in Settle in the 1950’s & 60’s.
1 – Talk
“Photographs open doors into the past but they also allow a look into the future.” Sally Mann (American photographer). In 2018 Settle Stories successfully bid for funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to deliver a Young Roots Project in Settle: Tom Faulkner: A Portrait of Stories. Tom’s work is the only detailed photographic record of ‘The Settle Pageant’, celebrated in style in Settle, in June 1953. Learn more about the project, the photographer and his photos.
2 – Discussion
“All photographs are accurate. None of them is the truth.” Richard Avedon (American fashion and portrait photographer). In the age of Snapchat and Instagram, of digital filters and deep fake, how should we view photographs? Are they true records or fake news or something in-between? What story do Tom Faulkner’s photos tell of Britain in 1953? Take part in this fun interactive discussion about how the photos we take shape the stories we tell.
3- Workshop
“Every photo, every ‘ONCE’ in time is also the beginning of a story starting ‘Once upon a time…” Wim Wenders ( German filmmaker, playwright, author, and photographer). Using Tom Faulkner’s coronation photographs, current press photos or your own photo reel as inspiration create a story starting, ‘once upon a time’. We’ll explore various storytelling techniques to get you started in this mixed media creative workshop.
