Skipton Pride 2025 & Yorkshire Day - God's Own Country (2017)

Fri 1st August 2025 7:30pm

As part of our Skipton Pride 2025 programme, and coinciding with Yorkshire Day we present a screening of God’s Own Country.

Set against the rugged beauty of the Yorkshire countryside, God’s Own Country is a powerful and intimate portrait of self-discovery, love, and redemption. The film follows Johnny, a young and emotionally repressed farmer, who numbs his loneliness with hard drinking and fleeting encounters. His world begins to shift when Gheorghe, a quiet Romanian migrant worker, arrives to help with the lambing season. What starts as hostility gradually evolves into something tender and transformative, forcing Johnny to confront his vulnerabilities and the life he’s built around silence.

With breath-taking cinematography and raw, authentic performances, God’s Own Country captures the stark realities of rural life while delicately exploring the complexities of human connection. Director Francis Lee’s debut feature is both grounded and deeply affecting, offering a story that is as much about the healing power of love as it is about the land and identity. It’s a quietly stunning film that resonates long after the final scene. Josh O’Connor (The Crown, Peaky Blinders) delivers a deeply moving performance as Johnny, capturing his internal conflict with striking vulnerability, while Alec Secăreanu brings warmth and quiet strength to the role of Gheorghe.
