Unstoppable enchanted brooms carrying pails of water and hilltop-dwelling giants are brought to life in this family-friendly concert of music for young and old presented by conductor Ben Crick.
The Sorcerer’s Apprentice by French composer Paul Dukas was already a popular concert piece long before Walt Disney acquired the rights for Fantasia in which Mickey Mouse stars as the hapless apprentice. Since then, the piece (heard here in George Morton’s skilful arrangement) has been a favourite orchestral showpiece for audiences of all generations.
Also in the programme is the ‘Russian Dance’ from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite, another Fantasia highlight, and The Penhill Giant, a ‘morality tale for primary school children’ for narrator and small orchestra. Specially commissioned by Skipton Camerata from writer Sally Edwards and composer Geoff Hannan, The Penhill Giant builds on the Yorkshire legend of a sheep-stealing giant that once lived in a fortress in Wensleydale.
Skipton Camerata
Founded in 2004 by its artistic director, Ben Crick, Skipton Camerata is North Yorkshire’s only professional orchestra and is the Skipton Town Hall orchestra in residence. In 2005, the orchestra took on the name Skipton Building Society Camerata in recognition of the generous support it continues to receive from its major sponsor, Skipton Building Society.
