Skipton Camerata: As Night Turns to Day
A Tale of Transformation
Fri 11th July 2025 7:30pm
Haydn Symphony no 6 ‘La Matin’
Dvořák Nocturne
Webern Five Movements for String Orchestra
Mozart Symphony 36 ‘Linz’
From the very first bars of La Matin, Haydn paints a vivid musical sunrise, lifting us from the quiet stillness of night into the brilliance of a new day in just six bars. This sense of transformation and contrast is the heartbeat of the entire program.
Composed in 1761, Haydn’s symphony straddles two worlds: the ornate elegance of the Baroque and the clarity of the emerging Classical style. It’s a portrait of a composer on the edge of a new era, bold, visionary, and endlessly inventive.
If Haydn stirs us awake, Dvořák gently leads us into a dreamlike calm with his Nocturne, a piece of tender, floating beauty that feels almost suspended in time.
From there, the theme of contrast evolves into a play on perception, with two very different glimpses of Vienna. First, we enter the edgy, modern world of Webern and his Five Movements for String Orchestra, short, intense bursts of sound that capture a city buzzing with uncertainty and avant-garde energy.
And finally, we return to Vienna’s classical heart with a late Mozart masterpiece, his radiant Linz Symphony. Written in just a few days, it closes the concert with confidence, brilliance, and a joyful spirit that still dazzles centuries later.
