Craven Museum Community Case display

Young Archaeologists’ Club curates museum display!

Craven Museum YAC has filled the Community Case for the summer.

Members of Craven Museum’s Young Archaeologists’ Club (YAC) have spent their last two sessions learning about how exhibitions are curated and curating their own temporary display for the museum.

Their brief was to curate a display on the theme of Heritage Craft, featuring a range of museum objects and modern replicas which link to crafts people did in the past, from any point in history. It had to appeal to a wide audience of children and adults without any prior knowledge of the subject.

The project involved:

  • Learning how to use Modes (our collections database) to find and assess objects for display
  • Object handling training, to ensure objects are handled appropriately to keep them (and us!) safe
  • Choosing their own objects and finding them in the museum store
  • Researching their objects and writing their own object labels for the display
  • Trying out and learning about a range of textiles-based heritage crafts, including spinning, weaving and rag-rugging
  • Installing their objects and some of their craft examples in the case

The display will be in Craven Museum’s Community Case until September 2026, so do come and visit! Opening hours are 9.30-4.30, every day except Tuesday.

Do you want to create a display for our Community Case?

Our Community Case case offers local groups an opportunity to showcase exhibitions that are important to them. We are keen to support local people to share their research on local topics, archives and artefacts. The Community Case is open to the public whenever the main gallery is open and new displays will be installed every three months.

If you have an idea for a new display in the Community Case, please email us to request an Exhibition Proposal form at cravenmuseum@northyorks.gov.uk
