Exhibition Gallery phone box commission

How would you creatively transform an iconic red telephone box? Yorkshire based creative practitioners are invited to submit proposals for a unique art and heritage project!

The restoration of the front of Skipton Town Hall has recently been undertaken and included the refurbishment of two red telephone boxes that have stood at the main entrance to the building for over sixty years. They are much loved by the town and its visitors, and we wish to create a space to celebrate our local history, creativity, and community.

We are now looking for an artist, partnership or collective to create an exhibition/installation in one of the two phone boxes, to link with the Exhibition Gallery that is housed in Skipton Town Hall. A separate commission is available for the other phone box, which will be Craven Museum inspired.

We are open to ideas and proposals regarding the creative use of these spaces, to create an extension of the Exhibition Gallery inspired by, and celebrating our local heritage and/or community. We wish to encourage/signpost visitors into the building to then visit the gallery space, and other exhibitions. Our Gallery shows an exciting changing programme of exhibitions throughout the year, ranging from fine and applied arts and crafts, heritage themes relating to our museum collections – to showing work evolved from working in partnership with varied community groups.

For this project, the artist/s would be available to engage in research and discussion with members of the local community/partners to explore their ideas and enable participants to contribute to the body of work produced in the final display.

This project has been funded by Skipton Heritage Action Zone (HAZ) which is part of a national programme of around 60 heritage-led regeneration projects, focused on revitalising high streets.
